Fair-Weather Tasks to End Your Summer

Get these maintenance items checked off before autumn sets in

For many it can be difficult to see summer's end approaching. However, it's also a perfect time to complete some house tasks while temperatures remain warm:

Prepare your heat sources

It is important to get maintenance done on the heating systems you will rely on during cooler weather. Get a professional to clean out your chimney and check your fireplace for any fissures or gas leaks (applicable). Get a furnace inspection if you haven't done so this year and change your furnace filter.

Avoid the deep freeze

While the weather stays pleasant, it can be a good time to clean out your garage to make sure there is space for your vehicles. When snow and ice come to the Okanagan, you will be so happy you don't have to start your day scraping and brushing before you can drive. You may also consider adding insulation to your garage, if needed, to ensure a warmer space and easier engine starting in frigid weather.

Remove temptation

Clean and hose off your waste bins. As the winter approaches, animals and critters can become more desperate for alternative food sources. If there is food residue on any of your bins, it can attract their stronger sense of smell. Consider using bleach or other antibacterial agents to kill all germs. The last thing you want is some rodents setting up a nest nearby that will affect other areas of your home or yard.

Sand is everywhere

Once your beach-going days are at an end, it is a great time to clean out your washer and dryer. There may be build-up of sand that has been tracked in on your clothing. Clear any sand from ther dryer drum and rubber seal and run the empty washer with special cleaning products designed for the job.
