Royal LePage Kelowna Real Estate Report for May 2024
As spring breathes new life into the Okanagan, it is important to be aware of the unique safety risks that come with this fresh season. Here are some proactive steps to address common spring hazards and maintain safe living environments so you can enjoy the season with peace of mind:
Slippery surfaces pose a significant hazard, especially after rain or when snow and ice melt, leaving sidewalks wet and slippery. To avoid slips and falls, keep outdoor areas free of debris and standing water. Place rugs or non-slip mats near entryways to absorb moisture and provide traction.
Seasonal allergies can also negatively affect our health and well-being during spring. Pollen, mould spores and other allergens can enter the home, causing sneezing, stuff nose and other symptoms. Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your air purifier to effectively capture airborne allergens. Vacuuming carpets and upholstery regularly with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter can also help remove allergens from interior surfaces.
Spring is a great time to inspect and test your home’s security devices. Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly, replacing batteries if necessary. Review your fie escape plan with family members and designate a meeting place outside the home in case of an emergency. Check your wildfire “go bag” to make sure that everything is working and there are no expired products.
In addition to dealing with specific hazards, maintaining general home safety in the spring is essential. Perform routine maintenance checks on outdoor equipment, such as fences, decks and stairs, to identify any signs of wear or damage. Make sure handrails are sturdy and secure, especially on outside stairs, to prevent falls.
