ECO-FRIENDLY TRENDS FOR SUSTAINABLE SUMMER LIVING

Save both the environment and your wallet with these helpful tips

As temperatures peak in the Okanagan this summer, energy consumption can also skyrocket as residents seek to keep cool. Yet a conscious shift towards sustainability amongst savvy homeowners is reflecting a desire to reduce their ecological footprint and even save a dollar or two in the long run. They are finding creative ways to make their homes more sustainable and adopt a greener lifestyle. Here’s how you can participate in the eco- friendly trend:

Let the sunshine in

Sustainable homes equipped with solar panels take advantage of the area’s abundant summer sunshine to produce clean, renewable energy. By harnessing the power of the sun, homeowners can reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources, reduce their electricity bills, and even feed excess energy back into the grid.

Control your environment

For older homes, updating to use new, innovative insulation and energy- efficient winws help to keep air cool inside during the summer and warm air in the home during colder months, to optimize interior temperatures and reduce heating and cooling needs. Making the shift to LED lighting, programmable thermostats and energy-efficient appliances are other ways you can make a difference.

Stop the water drain

Water scarcity is a concern in the Okanagan, especially during the dry summer months. Sustainable homes address this challenge by incorporating water-saving features such as low-flow fixtures, stormwater collection systems, and drought- tolerant landscaping.

Savings for all

Embracing sustainable homes isn’t just about saving the environment; It also offers significant cost savings. With reduced energy and water use, homeowners can realize long-term financial benefit through lower utility bills and potentially higher property values, as sustainable homes tend to be in high demand in the real estate market.
